Elias Hix is used to having hype surrounding his name. Since he released his first song “Mud-Stained Dress” and an album titled Thinner two weeks later, the South Carolina-born artist has had an exceptional amount of attention on him — for good reason. With a sound that is pushing the boundary of the indie-folk scene, Hix has had a visible influence on his peers at only 18 years old. His new track, “Paper Teeth,” is destined to continue bringing his one-of-a-kind sound to more ears.

Utilizing illustrative instrumentation, unreplicable harmonies, and top-tier songwriting, Hix combines these elements to create a sonically full song which has already made large amounts of noise on TikTok and Reels. With over 3.5k Reels created using the song, the 18-year-old artist is on-track to have an incredible first week of streaming.

“Paper Teeth,” like many of Hix’s songs, has a unique origin that can explain the cohesive nature of all parts of the song. Written in the kitchen of his childhood home on a cattle farm outside of Spartanburg, SC, the song centers around the complexity of insecurities and how they affect every relationship around you.

Be on the lookout for what’s next for Elias. Breaking out of the underground in the first half of 2023, it’s imperative that you follow along as the East Tennessee State University freshman continues his ascension to the top of the folk scene.
