Famous rapper, Dr. Dre and music industry tycoon, Jimmy Iovine, came to the consensus that they both dreaded high school. As a result, they decided to partner up and create a new public high school to their liking in Los Angeles, California. The two billionaires have reported that they will do whatever (and spend whatever) is necessary in order to make this project come to life.

The high school will be located in South L.A. and its ultimate goal is to motivate students to be critical thinkers, entrepreneurs, and innovators. This investment by Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine is a unique, rare, and unlikely endeavor, and will take place in the nation’s second-largest school system. More than 80% of children in this school system are Latino and black: additionally, the same number come from low-income families. The educational facility will be a magnet school, which means that kids can apply from across the sprawling district. Furthermore, transportation will be provided for those outside of the local area.

Dr. Dre has stated that “he wants to reach the inner-city kid, the younger me.” He also added that the school will be “a place that you can go where there’s something that you can learn that you’re really interested in.” The duo shared that the school will not be a music school, but a place for kids to expand their creativity. It will be a place where the students will potentially “go out and start their own company or go work at a place like Marvel, or Apple, or companies like that.”

Their project was approved last week by the L.A. Board of Education and is projected to open its doors in fall 2022. Stay tuned for more information regarding their educational venture.
