Jiubel has gained mass popularity on TikTok this summer. And while I haven’t been an active user of the app for a few months now, when I went to check out what exactly his 2.3M followers were subscribing to, it wasn’t hard to understand the hype. Dark humor and good music; the recipe to Gen Z’s hearts — myself included. Known for turning his followers' outrageous comments into catchy and irresistible jams, Jiubel’s mind seems to be brimming with creativity. And this musical creativity still translates in the music he releases outside of the platform. Last month he released his sunny single “Notice Me,” and now, continuing down the twists and turns of romance, he offers his latest single, “Scooby Doo.”
Speaking on the track he shares, “The idea came about when someone on TikTok challenged me to make a song that’s actually good while using a cartoon running effect in the beat. I accepted the challenge and made a fast paced song - the running sound reminds me of Scooby Doo, but the song’s about someone driving me crazy.”
Short and irresistible, “Scooby Doo” isn’t as playful as the 70s cartoon. Filled with an electrically urgent atmosphere, and a perfect descending hook, “Scooby Doo” was inspired by a fan's creative suggestions as well as romance induced delirium. The iconic sound effect and his syncopated panting serve as signs of confusion and slight panic, as he sings of the moments where a relationship grows awry to the point of one sided distance. Perplexed by their actions and disregard for his feelings he repeats throughout the hook, “You say I’m out of line/ girl don’t fuck with my head/what you do should be crime.” Peppered with omnipresent guitar riffs, compelling percussion and grounding basslines, Jiubel envelopes us in a disorienting cycle of desperation and insanity.
